This is one of the better mixed vegetable rice. The taste is good and food is delicious. The price is reasonable. However, there is always a queue and seating is limited.

Food taste like homecook food but service and attitude from the owners are bad. Force you to eat faster and now even worst - must have minimum amount of $5 for a mixed rice then can order

This isn't your average "economy rice" establishment; it's a family-run affair, lovingly managed by two Cantonese sisters. I have been a loyal customer of this little corner eatery for over 20 years, and what consistently brings me back is their home-style cooking. It strikes the perfect balance – never too salty, never too oily. Even after a generously portioned meal, my stomach feels comfortably satisfied, not heavy or sluggish. Unlike some lunches that leave you reaching for an afternoon nap, her food leaves you feeling energised. The variety of dishes, it must be said, is somewhat limited and rather standard. In fact, she prepares the same dishes virtually every day. However, this predictability is part of its charm; her regular patrons know exactly what to expect and appreciate the consistency. A particular highlight of the meal is the S$1 soup. Her soups are predominantly Cantonese in style – light, subtly seasoned with just a touch of salt, and, crucially, free from MSG. It is a simple pleasure that perfectly complements the meal. Given its location in the heart of Orchard Road, the rental costs have inevitably increased significantly over the past two decades. However, rather than passing these costs on to her customers by raising food prices, she has chosen to relocate her eatery several times, each time finding a more affordable shop front. Remarkably, her prices have remained consistent for the last 10 years, a testament to her commitment to providing affordable, quality food. Due to the smaller shop front, tables and seats are limited, and the eatery is invariably crowded during lunch hours. Consequently, it is advisable to finish your meal and make way for other diners. Susan Chan Food has been my favourite spot for an "economy rice" lunch for years, and this place will forever have my unwavering support, that is, until the sisters eventually decide to retire. Both of them are quite elderly, by the way, and one can only hope they continue to grace us with their culinary talents for many years to come.

My favourite cai fan stall in the area. Love their har cheong gai (prawn paste fried chicken) - it is crispy and very flavourful.

I really like the flavours in the dishes here. It is pricier than regular cai fan places, yet understandably so since it is in Orchard. The veggies were seasoned and cooked really well, which tells of the skill of the chef(s). The pork chop was tender enough and also really tasty. $1 for a piping hot bowl of soup was good value. I enjoyed how the staff took care to make sure that everyone who dined in was comfortably seated. The queue was long during weekday lunch hour but moved along fast.

Decent plate of Penang CKT! Would definitely give a go if I’m in the area.

Will I return: Yes Recommended: Penang Char Kway Teow A delightful accidental find in a quiet corner of an ancient relic of a shopping mall :-) If you like wok hei, then the SGD10 char kway teow is a must order. It has right rare balance of wok hei and a bit of char. Love the generous portion of Chinese sausage (Lup Cheong). Kueh Pie Tees were decent. Serving them in Peranakan (Straits Chinese) tea cups is a nice touch. Penang Asam Laksa was fragrant and had an 'old style taste' - right balance mint and prawn paste umami. If the gravy had more minced sardines, it would have been perfect. ----------------------- A return visit to Penang Kitchen 3 weeks later Food was good! Dishes were individually prepared with finesse. Ordered my first visit favourite char kway teow. It was packed with old style wok-hei goodness and a generous portion of lup cheong. The penang prawn noodle soup was good and not as spicy as I expected. Soup was not overpowering and it packed a solid 'prawn punch' The seafood hor fun, served in a claypot, was tasty accentuated with a bit of the burnt hor fun taste. Fried kangkong was fresh. The sambal wasn't too spicy, nicely balanced with a faint belachan fragrance.

We stumbled upon this little gem by chance and had our dinner here. A quiet and cozy spot. It's perfect for unwinding and enjoying a peaceful meal

The fried rice noodles and the fried carrot cake is good, the rojah feels like another dish but it’s still good. The Penang laksa is not good, it is not sweet enough not sour enough not enough prawn paste. It’s somehow a disappointment for that dish

Someone recommended this plc becos I like Penang Char Kway Teow. And this plc serve a pretty good plate of Penang CKT with decent wok hei. After eating, I ended up ordering the appetizer sampler set (chicken wing and lor bak) to take away for my wife. The lor bak aka Nogh Hiang is quite unique.
