Susan Chan Food at Far East Plaza represents the dying breed of mum-and-pop shops serving home-cooked meals with genuine care, operating from #05-100/101 on the mall's fifth level. This zi char establishment has earned a loyal following among Orchard Road workers seeking affordable, comforting Chinese food prepared with the authenticity that comes from family recipes rather than commercial kitchen shortcuts. What makes Susan Chan Food special is its unpretentious approach - this isn't about trendy presentations or fusion cuisine, but rather solid, satisfying Chinese dishes that taste like they were prepared in a home kitchen.
The menu features economy rice options that allow customers to choose from various dishes displayed counter-style, with popular favourites including soya sauce chicken, Chinese spinach (amaranth), beancurd with leek, sambal long beans, and prawn paste chicken. Beyond economy rice, Susan Chan serves sweet and sour chicken that reviewers consistently praise, along with seafood white bee hoon that has become a local favourite. The mixed vegetable soup provides comforting nourishment that perfectly complements the richer dishes.
The location on Far East Plaza's top floor requires knowing exactly where you're going - Susan Chan Food isn't relying on casual foot traffic but rather the dedicated customers who seek it out specifically. For those tired of generic food court offerings or mass-produced zi char that lacks soul, Susan Chan Food delivers the home-cooked authenticity and honest flavours that make it worth seeking out. The combination of affordable pricing, generous portions, and food prepared with care explains why this humble establishment has maintained its loyal following through the years.
Food taste like homecook food but service and attitude from the owners are bad. Force you to eat faster and now even worst - must have minimum amount of $5 for a mixed rice then can order

One of the most expensive you can find at Orchard Rd. Simple 2 veg + 2 meat rice combo cost almost SGD10, that otherwise cost less in a normal food court. And this shop is old looking and not worth the price paying for. Avoid it if you're not overly hungry.

We were famished and the rule of thumb is, most things tastes wonderful when you're hungry. However we were quite disappointed with the taste over what we had at Susan's corner.
Our usual eat wasn't opened hence we decided to try Susan's corner. We were welcomed by really hospitable aunties which we greatly appreciate her recommendation and hospitality. We ordered their signature white beehoon & looking over what others were eating, we decided to follow suit and ordered the salted egg yolk pork ribs.
Disappointed because the white beehoon is anything but your expectation of popular white beehoon with seafood that's served at many zichar stalls. This was more like the stalls own rendition of white fried beehoon. We were quite puzzled also when we found many curry leaves in the beehoon as well as chilli padi.although we love chilli, finding this in the beehoon just seems weird. As for the curry leaves, we're not sure if it was conveniently added because we also ordered the salted egg pork rib. our verdict is that it is overly salty, rather dry with random ingredients and it lacked fragrance.
The salted pork ribs has 0 salted egg taste unfortunately. The meat is well marinated with Hua diao cooking wine but this really doesn't help bringing out the taste of the salted egg and really just tastes like big pieces of salty meat marinated with Hua diao wine.
Overall we are quite disappointed with our meal especially being so hungry. I think Susan's corner needs to have a better focus on the tastes of the dishes it wants patrons to taste.

This is one of the better mixed vegetable rice. The taste is good and food is delicious. The price is reasonable. However, there is always a queue and seating is limited.

I really like the flavours in the dishes here. It is pricier than regular cai fan places, yet understandably so since it is in Orchard.
The veggies were seasoned and cooked really well, which tells of the skill of the chef(s). The pork chop was tender enough and also really tasty. $1 for a piping hot bowl of soup was good value.
I enjoyed how the staff took care to make sure that everyone who dined in was comfortably seated. The queue was long during weekday lunch hour but moved along fast.

This isn't your average "economy rice" establishment; it's a family-run affair, lovingly managed by two Cantonese sisters. I have been a loyal customer of this little corner eatery for over 20 years, and what consistently brings me back is their home-style cooking. It strikes the perfect balance β never too salty, never too oily. Even after a generously portioned meal, my stomach feels comfortably satisfied, not heavy or sluggish. Unlike some lunches that leave you reaching for an afternoon nap, her food leaves you feeling energised.
The variety of dishes, it must be said, is somewhat limited and rather standard. In fact, she prepares the same dishes virtually every day. However, this predictability is part of its charm; her regular patrons know exactly what to expect and appreciate the consistency.
A particular highlight of the meal is the S$1 soup. Her soups are predominantly Cantonese in style β light, subtly seasoned with just a touch of salt, and, crucially, free from MSG. It is a simple pleasure that perfectly complements the meal.
Given its location in the heart of Orchard Road, the rental costs have inevitably increased significantly over the past two decades. However, rather than passing these costs on to her customers by raising food prices, she has chosen to relocate her eatery several times, each time finding a more affordable shop front. Remarkably, her prices have remained consistent for the last 10 years, a testament to her commitment to providing affordable, quality food.
Due to the smaller shop front, tables and seats are limited, and the eatery is invariably crowded during lunch hours. Consequently, it is advisable to finish your meal and make way for other diners.
Susan Chan Food has been my favourite spot for an "economy rice" lunch for years, and this place will forever have my unwavering support, that is, until the sisters eventually decide to retire. Both of them are quite elderly, by the way, and one can only hope they continue to grace us with their culinary talents for many years to come.

Best lunch place in the city area yet affordable. Tried their Fried Chicken, Stir Fry Long Beans, omellete, and salted pork for $10. Must try the first 2, the salted pork is not as fragrant as the chicken, but still soft and edible. Get the soup of the day for $1 only with, small bits of meat. Lunch time is very crowded, to aim before 12pm to ensure place for dining in :)

My favourite cai fan stall in the area. Love their har cheong gai (prawn paste fried chicken) - it is crispy and very flavourful.
