I ordered a steak set but was a little surprised to be served steak that was still frozen with ice on it. For the price point (sgd30+ per person), I had expected better quality and preparation. Even if you want to use frozen steak, I shouldn’t be seeing ice on my table? Service also felt impersonal — the waiter serving my food held the tray with my dish for a moment as if expecting me to take it from his hands, even though the table was clear, and I wondered if I was expecting too much for the tray simply to be placed on the table. It’s not an excuse to say that because this is “cheap” at SGD30+ per person, service should be cold — just look at how warm and welcoming the service is at Saizeriya one floor below.

For a 1st time it was very fruitful experience. Highly recommend for those 1st time doing eating bbq. Especially if youre not too sure the staff is more than willing to help you out

2025.6.19 (Thurs) One of the few places I rate ambience higher than the food. Always walk past this place and admire the retro ambience. Today I finally could find time to try their weekday set lunch at $14.90 before GST. I like the food here much more than Oriental Kopi. The iced coffee was better than the iced tea. While the noodles for the Penang Assam Laksa was overcooked, the gravy and condiments were excellent. The Mee Siam with fried chicken is passable. As for the sides …. The prawn roll is the worst I have tasted in my life … just taste processed. The curry fishballs are passable. Just not my favourite. Ordering and payment is completely digital ! Absolutely love it.

The nasi lemak was good - tender chicken and the chilli is nice, but I ordered the egg hor fun and it looked completely different from the picture in the menu. The picture looks more like dry hor fun and thick/heavier taste but the actual was quite soupy. Still good as a hor fun dish but not what I was craving :( but everything else was good!

The drinks are very good and reasonably priced. We like their ice kopi, lemon with sour plum, golden lime with 7 Up and iced lemon tea. The restaurant was busy when we came around 3:30pm on a Saturday. The dishes were good too, especially the nasi lemak with curry chicken. The background music was a bit too loud though. The service was quick and the staff were friendly.

The Great Nanyang, more like The Greasy Nanyang. Nothing great about this establishment. The mutton rendang was a pile of bones and fats swimming in oil. The sauce was pure grease, the chicken was fried until it turned dark brown and dry, and everything tasted heavy and unpleasant. Then comes their “high tech” ordering system. What a disaster. You have to scan a QR code, then figure out an online menu that does not even match the physical one. Tabs are mixed up, items missing, and when you finally find what you want, you still have to key in your 16 digit card number and bank OTP just to pay. When you are hungry, the last thing you want is to play tech support on your own phone just to get food that turns out bad anyway. They charge a 10% service charge but you literally do everything yourself. Order your own food, pay on your phone, and carry on hoping someone notices you exist. The staff are too busy chatting among themselves to care. No greeting, no checking on tables, no interest in helping anyone. You can wave, call out, or stare right at them and they will still ignore you. They look bored, untrained, and completely disconnected from what customer service even means. And the sambal? They give you a tiny dot of it like it is gold. Extra sambal costs 60 cents even though older reviews said it used to be 50. Guess they raised the price to fund the oil in the rendang. Nothing about this place makes sense. The food is bad, the system is worse, and the staff are the final straw. The only thing “great” about The Great Nanyang is how great it is at wasting your time, patience, and money. (attached are some photos of their chipped enamel plates)

Great food, authentic coffee, and a lovely ambience. One suggestion to enhance the ordering experience: consider labelling dishes on the ordering platform the same way as on the physical menu, for example by using the dish codes. This would make it easier for customers to locate items without having to hunt for dish names.

Love the old time style decor. Easy to order system and food came promptly too. One of our fav breakfast spots with our old folks. There are two easy to access drop off bays and convenient parking in the basement

A great place to enjoy Nanyang style food ! The set lunch is only $14.90 and you get to enjoy a main, sides and coffee / tea ! The chicken Berempah is so good ! Highly recommend to choose the nasi lemak rice, cant forget how tasteful it is. Dont miss out the traditional toast !!!!

I was looking for a Muslim-friendly place to try laksa and found this cozy café near 111 Somerset, serving local Singaporean dishes in a nostalgic old-town vibe. I tried their lunch set menu for $14.9, which was totally worth it for both portion and taste! ⭐ Nyonya Curry Laksa 5/5: The broth was delicious, thick, flavorful, and so comforting. ⭐ Shredded Chicken Hor 4/5: The broth was lighter, but the prawn was huge! ⭐ Curry Fish Ball 5/5: Loved it! the curry tasted almost the same as the laksa. ⭐ Tuna Mayo Toast 5/5: Perfectly toasted with lots of tuna filling. ⭐ Ice Kopi O 5/5: The sweetness was just right! They served everything quickly, I waited no more than 10 minutes. I loved the decoration, and it’s surely a great spot for brunch or a chill afternoon.
