TLC Is In The House TLC Is In The House

I've always been a big fan of Old Chang Kee Curry Puffs. In fact, for decades, I never had a doubt that their luscious, savoury, buttery crust was quite simply impossible to dethrone. Then I discovered 1A's by sheer chance and bravado. Ladies and gents, this Chicken curry Puff is downright wicked! All the components are stellar, from the crumbly, tender pastry crust to the chicken curry filling that's quite the umami bomb. Nothing simple here, it's poetry in food engineering! I personally dread putting anything mediocre in my pie hole... anything entering that realm better be amazingly good. So when I wax lyrical to this extent, it's next level and I have to admit, these guys are making history. Granted, that brand name isn't sexy or cool and does not inspire confidence but it's hands down, in my book, the absolute best Curry Puff in the universe. I've sampled the whole shebang of snacks here, from the goreng Pisang (respectable choice if you need fruit) to the fishballs (forgettable). My gob only wants one thing now.... That heavenly Puff. Hey, there you go, a new brand name for them. You're welcome :)

I have been disappointed by the food quality in Singapore in this and last trip. Growing up in Singapore, I was expecting the same quality and taste to be passed down to the next generation but reality is many business are being sold and run by foreign operators are my assumption, especially in malls. From popiah, nasi padang, Japanese Tori, even a simple rujak did not have the same taste or originality. The only 2 I found was this crispy curry chicken puff and another store that sells bun and the glutinous chicken rice that still has the same quality of the past or even better. Will be back for more of the crispy puff.

Nice little stall inside the food area of Takashimaya Shopping Centre. Courteous, efficient service. Delicious curry puffs at a reasonable price. I had to resist getting more.

This crispy puffs stall location is very convenient as it is across the Takashimaya food court. I bought chicken curry puff, chili crab puff, and durian puff. The pastry part was super flaky and crispy. The chicken curry puff was good and flavorful but it only contained little piece of chicken meat. The chili crab puff was not spicy at all despite the 'chili' on its description. The flavor was good but again, only little crab meat inside the filling. The durian puff was good too. I think that they mixed the fresh durian with custard as the durian flavor was weak. Overall, they were good crispy puff and are affordable delicious snacks.

My favourites are the otah and chilli crab puff. Nice and flaky and remains crispy even after a period of time. Another family member swears by their sardine puff. I love they have many flavours catering to a wide variety of tastes.

It's a food stand inside the food hall at the basement of Takashimaya Shopping Centre. If you're looking for a snack, or something to bring to a party, they have many variations of crispy puffs here. Definitely, they're famous for their curry chicken puff, but I also like their yam puff. Their otah puff, chilli crab puff, are interesting. Not the cheapest, not very expensive, but definitely reasonably priced.
