East Ocean Teochew Restaurant at Takashimaya Shopping Centre has been serving exquisite Teochew-Cantonese cuisine and dim sum to Singapore diners since 1992. For 33 years, this beloved restaurant established itself as a culinary leader along Orchard Road, famous for its handmade dim sum pieces crafted into intricate animal shapes that delighted both children and adults alike.
The restaurant specialised in the refined flavours of Teochew cuisine while incorporating Cantonese favourites, creating a menu that appealed across dialect groups. Their dim sum lunches were particularly legendary, with fresh har kau, plump siew mai, and steaming baskets of various specialties arriving tableside from efficient pushcarts. The roast meat combination platter featuring succulent roast duck, crispy roast pork, and silky char siew became a signature dish that regulars returned for repeatedly.
Beyond dim sum, East Ocean was known for its vinegar pork trotters, a traditional Teochew dish that exemplified the cuisine's emphasis on bold, balanced flavours. The restaurant also garnered acclaim for its mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival and handmade dumplings that showcased the skilled kitchen's attention to detail and respect for culinary tradition.
After more than three decades of operations, East Ocean Teochew Restaurant served its final meals on December 28, 2025, closing a significant chapter in Singapore's dining history. The closure marked the end of an era for family-style Chinese dining along Orchard Road, leaving behind fond memories of birthday celebrations, business lunches, and weekend family gatherings centred around shared dishes and steaming baskets of dim sum.

Very disappointed with the 'last' meal with them. I wished it would have ended on a good note.
Came at 5.30 for the 6pm opening. We were the 4th table.
1st of all, no cold crab, no peking duck, no foie gras. Kind of defeat the purpose of eating here.
2nd, all dishes were consistently lacking in flavour. Roast duck, roast pork, char siew all lacking in flavour. The only dish well executed was the beef. Not sure if their taste has been tuned to the elderly crowd here.
3rd, orh nee was overly pureed. It's hard not to make comparison with other longstanding teochew restaurants.
Over 200 per pax, did expect better food.

The food was acceptable, but the service was extremely poor and significantly detracted from the experience. The allotted one-hour dining limit felt heavily enforced; we were actively pressured to relinquish our table, even immediately after our food was served. This made the meal feel rushed and unpleasant

The service was abysmal. The barbecued pork was almost pure fat with barely any lean meat โ and the staff didnโt even bother to ask if I preferred lean or fatty cuts. Sure, the roast pork's skin was crispy, but the meat itself was oily, heavy, and hard to enjoy. The dim sum was the only decent part of the meal, but the broccoli with crab meat was downright disgusting โ the crab meat looked and felt like something youโd rather not see on your plate.
The worst part? My chair was soaked. The foam cushion was full of water, and my pants ended up completely wet โ as if I had an accident. It was embarrassing, uncomfortable, and completely ruined the entire diningย experience.

It is utter disappointment for the food served as compared to the last few years.
Peking duck - unavailable, teochew cold crab - unavailable.
What was most on theala-carte menu was unavailable, so we decided on the set menu (which cost about $200 per pax).
To worsen things, food was bland, roasted duck from a coffeeshop may even taste better. Prawns used were frozen prawns. I didn't think it is right for consumers to paying premium price for frozen food.
For tbose who are like us who wantec to enjoy the food for the good old times, please spend your money elsewhere.

Food this horrible should honestly come with a public service announcement. I ordered noodles and what arrived looked like the kitchen ran out of ideas, ingredients, and motivation all at the same time. A few sad beansprouts were tossed on top, almost as if someone thought, โThis should distract them.โ It did not.
The dish was so shockingly plain that I genuinely wondered if I was part of some social experiment to test customer patience. If the goal was to serve the bare minimum required to technically call something โfood,โ then congratulations, they have achieved operational excellence in disappointment.
I would not return, even in an absolute emergency. At this point, instant noodles at home offer a more inspiring culinary journey. Hard pass, and I strongly advise others to manage expectations accordingly.

3.8/5 Went for the last time to East Ocean restaurant today for Winter Solstice meal celebrations. The whole restaurant was super crowded and the staff were busy and hectic. We ordered a combination of dim sum and ala carte dishes. The dim sum were mostly satisfactory but nothing stood out.
For the Ala carte dishes, the typhoon shelter roasted chicken was just okay, the scallops asparagus were a little bland and the scallops didnโt have a natural sweetness to them. The seafood vermicelli was decent tasting and the best dish of the meal was the signature garlic and spring onions prawns, they were delicous, fresh and sweet and with a nice savoury kick.
The yam paste was good and definitely better than the honeydew sago. We had wanted to order cold crabs but they werenโt available. Perhaps they were really busy but the food standard seemed to have dropped compared to our previous visits. Farewell East Ocean, this decades old Teochew-Cantonese restaurant would surely be missed by many.

Must come by 1115am to be in the first seating 1130-1230pm 1hr. If you are a little late, you have to be in the 2nd seating. The service is excellent and food is great. ๐ insane long queue but some people managed to grab a reservationโฆ maybe they know the staff personally. Great dim sum ๐ฅ

Came here with my family and ordered the set lunch. Very delicious meal. Love the peking duck and the sliced duck, which is very tender. Their dim sum are very nice too! Service staff are also very friendly and attentive ๐

Old world charm dim sum Teochew styled restaurant. Morning dim sum awesome. Braised styled duck. Soups and noodles all in highest bracket. Most convenient for Sunday morning yumcha or evening feast. Ample carpark in Ngee Ann City
