Tai Cheong Bakery at Takashimaya brings the legendary egg tarts that made this Hong Kong institution famous to Singapore's Orchard Road, offering shoppers a taste of authentic Hong Kong bakery culture since 1954. Located in the bustling food basement of Ngee Ann City, this Singapore outpost has maintained the standards that earned Tai Cheong its reputation as serving some of the best Chinese-style egg tarts in the world.
The bakery was founded by egg tart Master Au Yeung's uncle in 1954, with the recipes and techniques passed down through generations. The signature Hong Kong-style egg tarts arrive fresh from the oven throughout the day, featuring the characteristic flaky pastry crust and silky smooth egg custard filling that has devotees queueing even during busy shopping periods. The classic version remains the crowd favourite, but variations including charcoal milk tarts and flavoured options showcase the kitchen's creativity.
Beyond the famous egg tarts, Tai Cheong Bakery serves an expanded menu of Hong Kong classics that have been reinvented with a modern twist while respecting traditional flavours. The mince tarts appear seasonally, particularly during Christmas periods, alongside various baked goods that represent the best of Hong Kong's bakery traditions.
What makes this Takashimaya location special is its accessibility β tourists and locals who can't travel to Hong Kong can still experience the authentic flavours that made Tai Cheong an institution across the border. The consistent quality means customers always know what to expect: freshly baked tarts made from time-honoured recipes that honour their heritage while embracing their Singapore home.
Wanted to get something for dinner from one of stalls inside takashimaya
And as luck would have it , I managed to get sold dumplings from the sole stall who don't sell steamed ones and informed I've no other choices after I've paid.
Now I'm left holding two cold dumplings for the next few hours until I reached home
I understand staff want to contribute but I honestly feel short changed or cheated by what happened .

I didn't have much expectations since it's just good old Taiwanese style egg tarts but I was pleasantly surprised. The filling instead of being jelly-ish, tastes creamy and almost custardy in texture which i really enjoyed. The crust is very fragrant and buttery, though I personally feel like a milder flavour shell might complement the delicate, light filling better. The price is definitely on the higher side but it's worth a try at least once. The size is bigger than the common ones too.
I ordered 2 pandan tarts and 2 egg tarts on 8 Jan 2025, 6.02pm and was charged $10 for them, but was very disappointed when I opened the box and found that there were 4 egg tarts valued at $9.60 inside. The lady had packed it out of sight behind the small counter, and had put in the wrong items. My kids are so disappointed because they are the ones looking forward to the special pandan tarts. Is Tai Cheong going to make up for it the next time I go to the counter at Takashimaya?
Update: Tai Cheong resolved the issue very satisfactorily and the kids were very happy t get their pandan tarts in the end! :)

Delicious egg tart located at Orchard. I have tried their pandan flavoured and it was pretty good. Though i still prefer the original one. Their price is abit expensive ($2+). Would recommend for gifts as they do provide you with a nice box. ππ»ππ»ππ» β¦
