Gyutan-Tan at Takashimaya holds the distinction of being Singapore's first restaurant specialising in gyutan (beef tongue), offering adventurous diners a unique culinary experience centred on this Japanese delicacy. Located in the food basement of Ngee Ann City, this specialised restaurant brings the flavours of Sendai – Japan's gyutan capital – to Singapore's Orchard Road.
What makes Gyutan-Tan special is its dedication to a single ingredient prepared multiple ways. The restaurant serves various cuts of beef tongue grilled over binchotan, the premium Japanese charcoal that imparts a distinctive aromatic char and perfectly controlled heat. The menu includes premium cuts, regular cuts, and combination sets that allow diners to experience the different textures and flavour profiles that various parts of the tongue offer.
The signature gyutan is grilled to achieve a smoky exterior while maintaining tender juiciness inside, served with traditional accompaniments that honour the dish's Japanese heritage. For those new to beef tongue, the restaurant provides an accessible entry point into this ingredient that might otherwise seem intimidating. The Takashimaya location also offers exclusive items like Japanese afternoon tea sets and matcha fondue that demonstrate creative fusion concepts.
By specialising in a single ingredient, Gyutan-Tan achieves mastery that more general Japanese restaurants cannot match. Each preparation method – charcoal-grilled, pan-fried, slow-cooked – highlights different aspects of beef tongue's unique characteristics. For culinary adventurers seeking authentic Japanese flavours rarely found outside Japan, this restaurant offers an unparalleled experience.

A delicious grilled beef tongue set meal with rice, soup, and salad.
I walked in on a weekday without a reservation as there were many empty seats. Tried their beef tongue gyu tan set (thin) and iced tea. Beautiful to the eyes and grilled to perfection. The thick white yam slime went well with the barley rice. Price wise i think it's a tad pricier than the usual Japanese lunch you might find in the same mall. They have other usual more ordinary options in the menu if one does not enjoy beef tongue. Service was quick and polite.

Walked past this restaurant a few times and decided to try it.
Came for dinner and was surprised there wasn't much people.
The service was good and they explained to customers whom are first timers there.
The barley and rice mix was to soft for me but still manageable. The grilled ox tongue, beef and pork was great.

Went with the family to try out their tea menu. We ordered several tea sets for 2, the matcha affogato, gyoza, karaage, cheese fries and tuna salad. Everything was pretty well done! It was our first time here and the whole family was really impressed! Will definitely be back to try the other items on the menu.

The tongue meat is tender and rich in taste. The portions of meat and rice are quite generous, ensuring a satisfying meal. The dumpling skin is thin, providing a delightful texture that enhances the overall experience!

During my last visit to Singapore, I reserved a table for lunch with my best friend. We arrived with a mix of excitement and curiosity, as the idea of eating tongue was a bit unsettling for us. In the end, we decided not to try the Gyutan, but the dishes I ordered did not disappoint. My cod fish was beautifully cooked, and the flavorful rice paired with rich yam was truly delightful. However, my friend wasn’t as pleased with her pork—it seemed undercooked or too rare for her taste. That said, the staff were incredibly helpful, taking the time to explain each dish to us, which added to the overall dining experience.
