Ya Kun Kaya Toast has been preserving Singapore's traditional coffee shop heritage since its founding, with The Cathay outlet on Orchard Road offering locals and tourists alike a taste of authentic Nanyang breakfast culture. The brand has evolved from humble origins into an iconic Singaporean institution, recognised internationally for its role in maintaining traditional kopitiam flavours amidst rapid modernisation.
The signature kaya toast set remains the cornerstone of Ya Kun's appeal - crispy golden-brown toast spread with rich coconut jam (kaya) and cold butter, traditionally paired with soft-boiled eggs and robust kopi or teh brewed using time-honoured methods. This simple combination represents Singaporean breakfast at its most authentic, evoking nostalgia for older generations whilst introducing younger diners and visitors to traditional flavours.
Beyond the classic toast sets, Ya Kun offers hearty options for those seeking more substantial meals. The menu includes laksa - a spicy coconut milk-based noodle soup filled with prawns and aromatic herbs, silky smooth congee with savoury toppings, and various noodle and rice sets. Alternative toast options cater to different preferences, with cheese, peanut butter, tuna salad, and egg salad spreads available alongside French toast and Ya Kun's Asian-style toastwiches.
The beverage selection celebrates traditional Nanyang coffee and tea culture, offering an assortment of kopi and teh variations prepared using methods passed down through generations. The Cathay location benefits from high visibility and foot traffic from both the shopping complex and nearby office buildings, making it a convenient breakfast or lunch spot for the Orchard area's diverse crowd.

Biggest fan of Yakun for years. Experience at this outlet was horrendous to say the least.
Was queuing for breakfast on Friday morning when I noticed that the queue was not moving at all for a good 20mins and more. The staff were busy clearing online orders, and blatantly ignored the man waiting in front of the counter. The in-store queue started to get longer and longer, but still the staff ignored us.
Finally, when I spoke up to remind the staff that we have been waiting for very long and that they should respond to the man instead of the incoming NEW orders, the staff took his order and payment, then continued with the online orders instead of the man in store.
And when the people in the queue started to protest, one of the staff actually yelled back that "cannot wait, don't buy". How appalling is this behaviour?!
I understand that F&B service is very tiring and online orders may have a certain quota and time to meet before getting penalised. But the response? Ridiculous.
I hope the management can look into these two staff (20-30s), and also how their workflow is around online and in-store orders. Stop the apps if the physical queues are getting busy. Respond to physical queues before new orders come in.
Kudos to the senior staff (40-60s) who tried to help the situation, appreciated.

This is my first time at this outlet. Surprisingly the Kaya Peanut Toast and Coffee C tasted not as good as what I had at Yakun Plaza Singapura. The Kaya Toast is a tad sweeter and the Kopi C tasted like those from HDB coffee shop, not as flavourful as those brewed at Yakun Plaza Singapura. The coffee here doesn’t taste pure. The only thing I like about this place is its spaciousness. The seating area is huge and we have more comfort and privacy sitting here than at other Yakuns in town which were mostly very very cramped. I really love the spaciousness and may come here just to relax, doesn’t matter the less than desirable coffee.

Came here for a drink. Had kopi C Kosong. The problem with the drink is that they stinge in the evaporated milk so the coffee was awful, too dark and lack of milk. Would be better if more milk is added to the coffee.

Came here for breakfast after running some errands at Wilkie Edge. Had Tuna Mayo Toastwich. Really love the toast and coffee here. And the spaciousness. I always think of this place whenever I have a social meet up.

A nice and cosy Ya Kun outlet at The Cathay. The kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs are consistently good, and the coffee is strong and aromatic. Staff are friendly and the service is quick, making it a great spot for a simple breakfast or tea break. Convenient location if you're around Dhoby Ghaut.

great local experience, service was lovely and great prices for breakfast. would. recomend.
as a tourist, the toast had way too much butter, would recomend the french toast but its less authentic. but the locals seemed to love it so no points off.

i dont know why but kaya toast at ya kun kaya singapore is always good. the combination of thin and crispy toast vs butter and kaya that smooth and melting in your mouth never fails. loved it! 🤍

Here’s a smoother, polished rephrase:
“We visited this place for breakfast to try their famous kaya toast. We ordered the Kaya Butter Set(3.5/5) and the Egg Mayo Toastwich(4/5). The Kaya Butter Set had a bit too much butter, and you could really feel it while eating, but the coffee was on the stronger side and paired well with the soft-boiled eggs. The Egg Mayo Toastwich was good too. Overall, it’s a decent spot for a quick breakfast.”
