Taste wise - The soya source for sashimi and the dipping source for Shabu Shabu is tooooo salty.
Service wise - no refill for drinking water(if it‘s free then I’ll just suck it but it not) and salty source makes it feel even worse.
And we were kept being recommended or rather ‘pushed’ to order expensive dishes even we refused.

Disappointed with their Korubuta Tonkatsu Jyo Set (most expensive one) the breading was not coated properly and not tender enough, taste bland.

TLDR;
Mediocre food, high prices, terrible service - what a lethal combo!
I used to go to Tampopo at Liang Court ages ago when I was younger so thought I’d give this a try. The waitress was a bit brusque but no worries, I got a table with my 3 year old who needed a high chair. Opened the menu and - it was pretty pricey - a lot of the dishes cost between 30 - 60. There was also no ramen which Tampopo was known for, no worries hence the ‘grand’ right ? I actually wanted to leave at this point but my son refused (toddlers, sigh) so I ordered a $9 chawan mushi and $22 vegetable soba for him first while narrowing down my own choices.
1. The chawan mushi was tiny, in a tea cup, and hence overpriced I felt
2. I tried to order a shabu shabu dish (hotpot) but was informed I could not because my table has no stovetop burner. The same brusque waitress just kept saying she had asked me if I wanted the booth seat and I did not want it because I needed a high chair (she did ask once at the start but never explained that I would need the stovetop burner if I wanted to order a shabu dish lol)
The table next to me (who had been seated later than me) had a burner and their food had not arrived yet - so they could have swapped tables with me, but she seemed horrified at the thought of disturbing them (seems like one of them was a regular customer and she was very chummy with them). I thought about asking them to swap tables (I don’t think they would have minded) but decided not to bother and not to order for myself.
3. The soba came. The good thing was that it was a big bowl, the bad thing was that it was really soggy and overcooked, with a couple of carrot slices, mushrooms, lots of leeks and cabbages. I think I could have cooked it myself.
4. I was now glad I didn’t order the shabu dish due to the super bad service otherwise I would be stuck there for a longer time and it probably wouldn’t be good anyway.
5. A lady at the table next to us got super angry cos her kids food took forever to come. The staff managed her situation poorly and she started saying very loudly that she would never come back.
6. My feelings exactly! Plus the atmosphere was dingy, and my water was only refilled when I asked for it.

Overall a pretty pricey meal, but the food quality here is good. The sashimi was fresh and generously sliced, which we appreciated. I enjoyed the soft shell crab roll very much, which had tobiko and was generous with their soft shell crab. The squad was well grilled, and not chewy at all. Pork cutlet was well fried and not too oily. It was also crisp on the outside. Point to note is that they charge $5 for a bottle of homemade iced green tea and won’t refill it.

Our favourite go-to for casual Japanese dining. The restaurant is nicely done up, and the best seats are the 3 booths that get taken up quickly. There is an extensive menu ranging from sashimi, sushi, tempura to Shabu Shabu. The service staff led by Indika is very friendly and attentive. The empty dishes are cleared promptly, and the green tea gets refilled without our asking. Their weekday lunch sets are the best value for money. The weekday lunch special menu changes regularly. We had the Hokkaido Gozen (S$25++) and the Saba Shioyaki Gozen (S$22++), and both were excellent at that price point. They were having premium beer promotions when we were there. We were told that the beers were brought in by the Tampopo group and not available at the supermarkets. Do note that the restaurant does get very busy on weekends, and reservations are recommended.
Was back again, and we had the Ladies Special (S$25) and the Grand Special Gozen Box (S$50). They were both very good and valued for money.
We decided to try the Omakase dinner, which is available only on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Reservations are required, and there is limited seating. Dinner starts at 7 pm. We have had quite a few Omakase meals at different Japanese restaurants, and Tampopo Grand has the best value for money. The ingredients in their Omakase Platinum were very fresh and presented on beautiful crockery. The chef was going around the tables explaining about the food. We will definitely be back for more Omakase dining.

Very fresh and generous servings of sashimi. Beef dishes were very good especially the wagyu rice on hot stone. There were many dishes that were not available when we were there but fortunately whatever we ordered were good. Tempura dishes can be further improved- the dough was too thick and oily. Tampopo is a reliable restaurant for group meals. Although not an exciting place, it has maintained its food quality over the many years.
