Japanese Propaganda Centre Historic Marker

Location: Orchard Road

The Japanese Propaganda Centre Historic Marker at The Cathay commemorates a significant chapter in Singapore wartime history. When Singapore fell to Japanese forces in 1942, the Cathay Building then Singapore first skyscraper was commandeered and renamed Dai Toa Gekijo. It became the headquarters for the Japanese Propaganda Department, broadcasting Radio Syonan and serving as the Military Information and Propaganda centre throughout the occupation years.

The marker serves as an important educational reminder of this complex period, including the notable fact that Lee Kuan Yew, who would later become Singapore founding Prime Minister, worked here during the occupation in the Japanese propaganda department. This historical connection adds layers of significance to the site, which later witnessed a bombing attack in 1965 during the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation.

Today, The Cathay stands as a National Monument the 48th building to receive this designation in Singapore. The historic marker helps visitors and younger Singaporeans understand the building multifaceted role in the nation history, from its pre-war glory as a pioneering skyscraper to its wartime transformation, and eventually to its current incarnation as a retail and entertainment destination. For history enthusiasts, this marker provides a tangible connection to Singapore wartime experience and the complexities of occupation.
