Mr Obanyaki at Takashimaya has been a beloved fixture in the food basement of Ngee Ann City for years, serving authentic Japanese pancakes that have developed a loyal following among locals and tourists alike. This small stall is always recognisable by the queue that forms whenever fresh taiyaki and obanyaki emerge from the griddles – a testament to the quality that keeps customers coming back.
What makes Mr Obanyaki special is the authentic Japanese approach to these traditional treats. Taiyaki, the fish-shaped pancakes named after the sea bream they resemble, are filled with classic ingredients like red bean paste, custard, and chocolate. The obanyaki (大判焼き) – the round, disc-shaped version – comes with similar fillings, offering the same delicious taste in a different format. Both feature the characteristic crispy exterior and soft, fluffy interior that marks perfectly made Japanese pancakes.
The stall has become an anchor tenant in Takashimaya's food basement, providing an affordable snack or sweet treat for shoppers refuelling during their shopping expeditions. The green tea flavoured batter with red bean filling is particularly popular, combining the earthy bitterness of matcha with the sweetness of azuki beans in classic Japanese flavour harmony.
For many Singaporeans, Mr Obanyaki has been part of their shopping trips to Takashimaya for as long as they can remember – a reliable constant in Singapore's ever-changing retail landscape. The consistent quality and reasonable prices explain why there's "always a long queue," as regulars know that the wait is worth it for fresh, authentic Japanese pancakes made with care.

I had an unpleasant experience with a cashier when I mentioned a mistake in my order. She reacted by raising her voice and was quite rude. Perhaps some refresher training on handling customer concerns would be helpful for her, regardless of her seniority.

Bought Obayanki chocolate and matcha. Was shocked when there was hairs inside rhe chocolate Obayanki.

Very rude old saleslady selling. I wanted to try 1 round cheese and 1 fish shaped cheese flavour thn she scolded me when she pressed 2 cheese and i said i only wanted 1 since she told me the round one was custard and not cheese. Initially i wanted to try both if both had cheese. I am unfamiliar with this store but was very excited to have cheese pancake. I did not know what shape had what flavour. she was selling and she did not have to be so rude. Boss please replay the cctv i was in such a good mood, so happy until i met your rude staff. To add on, there was no queue and i was the one and only person at that time. She could have patiently explained instead of yelling at me. Even the stallholders next door looked over to see what the issue was.

Have been eating this obanyaki since young and it used to be my favourite and I’ll travel here to buy this. But standards have dropped so much that I threw away after taking a bite. It’s not edible, the skin is extremely hard (not crispy) and the ingredients inside is very little. Mr Bean pancake is nicer than this, really makes me sad.

long queue. was recommended this & thought i’d be wowed as it was freshly made but it tasted quit average & had very little filling. i got the cheese Taiyaki. only plus is it was hot & slightly crispy on the outside. maybe the obanyaki has better flavours?

Finally found it in the corner near Cold Storage (Food Stall 3) after walking round and round the basement. Served by a pleasant Indian lady. Warm and delicious red bean pancake. No queue, mid-week lunchtime.

comforting snack during any of my Singapore trip! they make fresh ones all the time since they sell out so quickly, there's always a long queue for these. however, the auntie are not so friendly which is understandable due to being busy, but sometimes feel a bit uneasy

A must-have snack to enjoy whenever I am at Takashimaya. The counter staff might appear grouchy but it is understandable. The pancake production rate is fixed but the customer queue is perpetual, especially during weekends. The sole cashier has to take orders and pack them and manage payment transactions. I would be so stressed trying to remember whose orders I have not fulfilled!

I love the cream cheese taiyaki here. Crispy yet not overdone such that it’s charred or too hard. The texture inside is also soft and fluffy, with just the right amount of filling. Makes for a nostalgic snack, though the price has gone up so much that I have to think twice before buying nowadays.

One of the best pancakes (fish pattern style) and regular pancakes. Their battered tastes different than others who sold elsewhere. Must try the cheese pancake, green tea (in green)and red bean mochi mochi.
