Singapore Night Festival 2026: Myths and Legends Takes Over the Bras Basah.Bugis and National Museum Precinct 21 August to 5 September
Singapore Night Festival returns for its 17th edition from 21 August to 5 September 2026, themed Myths and Legends. The festival spreads across the Bras Basah.Bugis precinct and introduces a new Museum Zone centred on the National Museum of Singapore, which sits on Stamford Road at the Dhoby Ghaut and Lower Orchard edge. For Orchard Road visitors, the Museum Zone is the most accessible entry point, a short walk from Dhoby Ghaut MRT and directly connected to the Orchard Road shopping belt.
The festival is free for most programmes and runs across three weekends. Festival Director Qazim Karim frames the theme as an invitation to "journey through Bras Basah.Bugis and uncover the many stories that continue to shape Singapore and the region." Presented by HeritageSG, the 2026 edition leans heavily into regional folklore rather than generic light art.
Tales of Earth and Sea at the National Museum
The centrepiece is Tales of Earth and Sea, a facade projection mapping spectacle on the National Museum of Singapore by The Fox, The Folks, a multimedia artist team based in Bandung, Indonesia. The work imagines myths as living traditions rather than frozen stories, projected across the museum's facade with an original cross-border soundtrack by Singapore's Artusik in collaboration with UiTM Malaysia. This is the headline work for the Museum Zone and the one most likely to draw the largest crowds.
The opening weekend also sees the Southeast Asian debut of Birdmen by Dutch theatre company Close-Act, with towering illuminated birdmen on stilts roaming the museum grounds alongside the projection mapping. The combination of facade projection and roaming street theatre is the festival's marquee free experience.
The Forbidden Hill night trail at Fort Canning
The Lost Legacy of Fort Canning: The Forbidden Hill is a 70-minute guided night trail through Fort Canning Park that digs into the legends of Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill. The experience combines archaeological history, mythology, traditional Malay dance, physical theatre and cinematic soundscapes, transporting visitors into 14th-century Singapura. Fort Canning Park is a short walk from Dhoby Ghaut and is part of the Lower Orchard heritage corridor, which makes this trail the second in-scope anchor for Orchard Road visitors after the National Museum.
MALAM Projection Mapping Competition at The Cathay
The inaugural MALAM Projection Mapping Competition celebrates emerging digital artists from Southeast Asia. Nearly 50 submissions were received, with the top 20 entries projected onto the facade of The Cathay during the festival's opening week. The five winning works remain on display for the rest of the festival. The Cathay sits on Handy Road, directly opposite Dhoby Ghaut MRT, which makes this competition the most Orchard-adjacent of the festival's offerings. Supported by Epson, the competition reinforces the festival's role as a regional platform for projection mapping.
The Museum Zone and the four festival zones
The new Museum Zone, around the National Museum and Children's Museum Singapore, includes Vikings of the Tropics by TELL YOUR CHILDREN, drawing on the maritime tales of La Galigo and Bugis traders, and The Dragon's Tooth: A Legend of Becoming Light by Starlight Alchemy at SMU Campus Green, a bamboo installation reimagining Long Ya Men. The three returning zones stretch from Funan to CHIJMES, Cathay Green to Waterloo Centre, and Bras Basah Complex to Stamford Arts Centre. Zone 1 includes Once Upon A Time at Capitol Singapore and Rising of Sister Islands at Funan. Zone 2 has THE BLOOMING HEARTS FORTUNE MERLION at Plaza Singapura, a 2.8-metre mechanical sculpture made with recycled PET bottle flakes. Zone 3 includes Stormy Straits at Bugis Street Art Lane and Lovebug by ART-ZOO at the National Library Building Plaza.
