Matchaya at Takashimaya Shopping Centre brings a "Progressive Tea Bar" concept to Level 3 of Ngee Ann City. Operating as Hvala, this specialty cafe focuses on matcha drinks and desserts, plus other tea blends like hojicha and earl grey, creating a haven for tea enthusiasts seeking premium Japanese tea experiences in Orchard Road.
The Takashimaya location serves as a flagship that showcases ceremonial-grade matcha prepared with proper technique. The menu features various matcha preparations from traditional usucha (thin tea) to contemporary creations like matcha lattes, matcha yuzu basque cheesecakes, and seasonal specials that highlight tea's versatility. Prices around S4 per cup reflect the premium quality of matcha used—ceremonial grade rather than culinary grade, sourced directly from Japanese producers.
What makes Matchaya distinctive is its educational approach to tea. The staff can explain differences between matcha varieties, demonstrate proper preparation methods, and recommend food pairings that complement tea's flavour profiles. This transforms coffee break rituals into tea appreciation sessions, introducing customers to the complexity and depth that high-quality matcha offers when treated with respect.
Located opposite ABC Cooking Studio on Level 3, Matchaya attracts shoppers seeking rest during shopping marathons. The cafe provides a calm, refined environment that contrasts with bustling mall corridors while remaining conveniently accessible. For tea lovers who find coffee shops everywhere but quality matcha rare, Matchaya addresses a significant gap in Singapore's beverage scene, bringing authentic Japanese tea culture to mainstream retail settings.
Food was good. A bit pricey though. Understaffed so don’t expect proper customer service.
Update 1 year later: Ordered the Miso glazed sous vide salmon as it looked good on menu. Unfortunately it was incredibly bland but I guess it is healthy. Won’t be returning here for food again.

I’d like to share my recent experience at Matchaya, which unfortunately left much to be desired — particularly due to the service we received from a server named Wei Ping.
When we walked in, the café wasn’t busy at all, so there was no reason for anyone to be rushed or inattentive. Wei Ping greeted us with a hello, but then abruptly tossed the menus onto the table and said, “You can order at the counter,” without offering any further explanation or courtesy.
When I went up to place our order, I was informed that the item I wanted wasn’t available. I politely mentioned that it would have been helpful to be informed earlier at the table. Her response? A smirk, followed by, “No, we have a lot of things on the menu. You can order anything else.”
That exchange was already disappointing, but the experience got worse. She got our order wrong. And when we pointed it out, instead of apologizing or offering to make things right — which is standard in any decent service setting — she smirked again and said, “If you want the other item that was missing, please come pay for it at the till, and we’ll give it to you.”
As an executive chef with over 30 years in the F&B industry, I fully understand how demanding this line of work can be. But I also know that respect, attentiveness, and a genuine attitude go a long way — especially when it comes to service. If someone finds it difficult to treat guests with basic courtesy, then perhaps hospitality isn't the right fit. This experience was not only disappointing, it reflects poorly on the brand and on all the hardworking professionals in our industry who take pride in what they do.

Ordered their main, and it looks nothing like the photo (see pics) Looks like it was cooked in a school canteen, with mushy rice, and the salmon was not even hot and there’s no taste at all.. For the price $19.90 before gst and service charge paid, totally not worth. Will not be back again. Hope the management can do something about their food, so disappointing as it was my first time visiting and this cafe was highly raved.

Matchaya has very nice soft serve ice cream! We tried the matcha and Houjicha Soft Serve (Cup $6, Cone $7 before GST). It's spacious and well litted. Nice interior design. Water is chargeable at 50 cents each cup so I didn't order.

Matchaya is a gem in town. Dropped by to buy hojicha powder as I was into making of own hojicha latte these days. Ordered hojicha milk & matcha milk together with a hojicha lava cake for my daughter & myself. Hojicha milk was rich with a deep, satisfying flavor. The hojicha lava cake is a must try for hojicha lovers. The hojicha sauce within is soft & buttery. Not too sweet n it makes everything feel just right.

I went to SG for a holiday and visit my boyfriend here. I did search many matcha cafe in SG and I found many interesting matcha cafe. One of them is Matchaya in Takashimaya mall, located at 3rd floor. I tried to use a local transportation, bus to take me here. Almost a hour. And i couldn't wait to try the cake and their matcha. Once i arrived here, there was a promotion, buy one drink, free one pastry. I love the promotion! I ordered Cold Signature Koicha Milk with 50% sugar and also their Signature Matchaya Yuzu Cake.
In my opinion as a matcha lover and have been trying many matcha cafe. I think the drink is standard flavour, not too bitter as i knew how smooth taste of the matcha, how good quality of the matcha powder. If you couldn't taste the bitterness, mean they use high quality of the matcha powder.
For the cake, oh my...i love it. I think it's very good combination that they combine matcha with yuzu curd, sweet and a bit bitter of matcha, contrast with a sourness of yuzu. Perfect! And most importantly, all their staffs here were so friendly ans welcoming. I suggest you guys should try and you will love it like i do! :)
