Calm, minimalist space tucked inside Takashimaya — perfect for a quiet break. Loved the matcha drinks and cake; beautifully balanced and not too sweet. A little escape in the middle of Orchard!

Been here a couple of times since my original review and the place grows on you. Had thought the sofa at the back would be premium yet the counter at the front places you just as ease as anywhere else; you feel calmed while the world rushed busily past. Angella was gracious enough to share that the name is pronounced vala since the h is silent and its deeper meaning and significance. Ask her about it when you pop by, whyduncha? Matcha petit has now become my go-to soul restoring treat

We visited Hvala with high expectations. The space itself is spacious and bright, making it visually pleasant at first glance. However, there is a strict one-hour time limit, so this isn’t a place to linger, chat, and slowly enjoy your drinks. The latte art was virtually nonexistent and felt carelessly done, which was disappointing given the café’s reputation. While the ceremonial-grade matcha used was clearly of good quality, the preparation lacked skill and intention—it didn’t feel crafted with care or respect for the tea. Overall, despite the minimalist setting and quality ingredients, the experience fell short. The rushed atmosphere and lack of attention to detail made the visit underwhelming, and unfortunately, not one I’d be eager to repeat.

I did not know that they have vegan waffles and ice cream. I tried the vegan waffles with 1 scoop of gelato ($20.40 including gst) and opted for the chrysanthemum sobacha (buckwheat tea) the waffles were crispy on the outside and soft (reminds me of mochi) with a cinammon taste and the ice cream was sweet with a strong chrysanthemum taste. Pricey but an option for those looking for dairy free desserts, very tough.

Nice place for desserts but I honestly do not get the hype or the queues. Matcha latte waa really average but basic for a quick fix. Houjicha latte waa nice. Matcha cake was not very matcha-y. Brownie w matcha ice cream was better if you have a really sweet tooth because the brownie is REALLY sweet. But it was a good balance between a non-sweet matcha latte and the brownie. Desserts prices were high so I probably won't get my desserts here next time.

Tried Hvala’s matcha ice cream for the first time. They offer different intensity levels (1, 2, and 3) at different prices. I went for level 1, the most affordable option. Taste was decent, but I suspect the higher levels might bring out a stronger and more satisfying matcha flavor—worth trying next time.

We ordered the Sei Matcha, which is supposed to be a high-grade matcha and costs almost $15, with an additional $1 for oat milk. However, I found it quite average. We also ordered the Tsuki Matcha with less sugar, but it was a bit too bitter. We requested the counter staff to add more sugar, and it ended up tasting just right. I’d recommend sticking to the normal sugar level, as it’s not too sweet and tastes better balanced. The Yuzu ice blended drink was not bad, but overall, the drinks are quite expensive — especially considering the matcha wasn’t fantastic. However, the service made up for it. The staff were excellent. When we asked to add sugar, they not only accommodated the request but also kindly offered to change our glass drinks to takeaway cups when we mentioned we might not be able to finish them. They did this for all four drinks, which we really appreciated. Great service! Full house on a Monday night as the ambience is so welcoming.

Nice spot for matcha and hojicha! The vibe is chill and it’s a good place to sit and chat since it’s not too noisy. It does get pretty crowded, but when we went there wasn’t a wait, which was great. Overall a ok place to grab tea.

🍵 Genmaicha Latte This was the highlight for me. The roasted rice aroma comes through beautifully, balancing the grassy green tea with a warm, nutty depth. The sprinkle of roasted rice on top adds both fragrance and a subtle crunch. Smooth, comforting, and less intense than matcha — perfect if you want something mellow but still layered.

Selling tea experience in a different level, its good taste, but i wish to have better way of serving it or different level of tea experiences... since the price is above average, we just expect a bit more 😅☺️✌️ …
