Oil and Gas Analyst

Hartree Partners is seeking an Oil and Gas analyst to join our investment team. The analyst will focus on global oil and gas equities, integrating fundamental market insights with financial analysis to generate differentiated investment ideas. The candidate will provide global coverage on companies across the oil and gas value chain, from upstream exploration and production to midstream transportation and storage, and downstream refining, marketing, and integrated energy companies.

This role requires a deep understanding of energy markets, company valuations, and sector dynamics, with the ability to translate complex analysis into actionable investment recommendations. The successful candidate will be effective at conceiving and executing in-depth industry, competitive, and financial analyses.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

• Conduct fundamental equity research across the global oil and gas sector, including integrated majors, E&Ps, midstream and downstream companies.
• Develop and maintain robust financial models to evaluate company and asset performance, and relative valuations.
• Formulate and test differentiated investment hypotheses through industry, competitive, and financial analysis.
• Deliver clear, concise, and impactful investment recommendations to portfolio managers and senior stakeholders through reports and presentations.
• Monitor ongoing developments in the global energy sector and assess implications for oil and gas equities and related investment opportunities.
• Collaborate with colleagues across trading desks to generate cross-asset insights and trading ideas.
• Build and maintain relationships with industry participants, corporate management teams, and sell-side analysts.
• Make proactive buy/sell recommendations and communicate investment views with appropriate team members.

Requirements: education, competencies & skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field.
• Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience in oil and gas equity research, investment banking, or commodity analysis.
• Strong knowledge of oil and gas fundamentals, including supply/demand modelling and cost curve analysis.
• Proven expertise in financial modelling, accounting, and equity valuation methods.
• Ability to synthesize large datasets and translate them into actionable insights.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex ideas.
• Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Preferred Requirements

• Previous experience in an energy-focused investment setting (hedge fund, asset manager, or trading firm).
• Familiarity with integrating commodity fundamentals into equity analysis to generate cross-asset investment views.
